Sub-Title: A Gilded Age Epic: The Construction of Penn Station and Its Tunnels This book really tells several inter-related stories. On the one hand it is simply a story of increasing the transportation into New York City just like it has increased to the other cities around the country. Before the Pennsy ran these tunnels under the river travelers had to take a ferry across the river. Afterward the trains ran to Penn Station. Another story is of the conflict between the railroad (in this case the honest, moral, good guys) and the Democratic Party's Tammany Hall organization who had to approve the project (they wanted a $300,000 bribe to agree to the project). It's also a story of the impact that the railroads had in their time when travel by rail was the standard way of taking long trips. (This faded with the acceptance of the automobile, but ridership on Amtrak is rapidly growing again because of the high price of gasoline). All in all, this is a fascinating book that reads almost like a novel but it's all true. |
