Sub-Title: An International Comparative Analysis (Transport Economics, Management, and Policy) At the start of the 20th century the railroads were a prime example of high technology, business potential, and a true growth industry with a near monopoly on transport. The PC industry of their time. Because of the monopoly aspects of railroads, most countries began passing laws to heavily regulate or take over the railroads. And this was true around the world. At the start of the 21st century the railroads are near moribund in most of the world. Railroads, however, bring some outstanding advantages to a society, and consequently a number of countries around the world began experimenting with ways to improve the performance of their railroads. In England, the track was privatized into a company called Railtrack. And the rights to move equipment over that track was shared by many operating companies. In the US. Private railroads have been the rule, but they have reduced to four major lines. The changes in recent time have delt with deregulating the pricing to be carged. This book examined the effects of these options, in the many variations in which they have been carred out. It is written by a group of experts who bring divergent views and beliefs to the problem. While the book is excellent as it is written, and brings some refreshing insight into the problems railways and the public they serve face, there is one more subject that I would really have liked to see the authors address. That is, what predictions might they make about the future as the price of fuel grows. Where does the economy of the steel wheel on the steel rail begin to take over from trucks and private automobiles purely as a matter of efficiency. What will be the viewpoints of governments? |
